How to get to Koh Phangan, Thailand

No matter what method of travel you choose there currently is no direct transit to Koh Phangan, however it is well worth the effort and with a little planning, arriving on Koh Phangan is a as simple as connecting the dots. The following are ways to get from Bangkok to Koh Phangan starting with the cheapest (most difficult) to the most expensive (easiest).

Bus From Bangkok To Koh Phangan

The most  economical way to travel is by bus. The buses normally depart from Khao San Road in the morning and evening or there are buses that leave from New Southern Bus Terminal at Boromrat Chonnani Road in Bangkok. The "VIP"  buses are more comfortable than the regular “A/C” busses and make less stops along the way for only 100 Baht more. Tickets are available from most travel agencies in Bangkok or at the bus terminal.

Buses depart from Bangkok and arrive at the ferry terminals in Chumphon or Suratthani and if you are really on a budget, Donsak where the car ferry departs. If the choice is available, we suggest departing at the Chumphon ferry terminal. The boat ride is longer, but it's faster and much more comfortable than the Bus.

Once you arrive at the ferry terminal, you will then take a ferry to Koh Phangan. There are three ferrys that service Koh Phangan from mainland Thailand. The ferry you take will often depend on the ticket you purchased. The best and fastest ferry is the Lomprayah. The Lomprayah departs from both Chumphon and Suratthani. Once on the ferry you make a few stops along the way to Koh Tao, Koh Samui with your final destination being the Thongsala pier in Koh Phangan.

*THINGS TO KNOW: You should plan for at least twelve hours of travel from the time you leave you guest house to the time you arrive on Koh Phangan. If you're traveling by bus it's really not worth saving the extra 200 Baht by buying the cheapest ticket. Be sure to carry all of your valuables with you. Never stow away anything valuable under the bus. If you have a schedule to keep it is advised you purchase your tickets at least a day in advance especially periods durring Full Moon Party and National / International Holidays.

Train From Bangkok To Koh Phangan

If you choose to travel by land, the most comfortable way to go is by the night train from the Bangkok Railway Station in Hua Lamphong, to Suratthani. There are several types of tickets available, but it's suggested you select the sleeper car option for this eleven hour journey. It is a little bit more expensive than the bus but you will be well rested for the day ahead.

There are three types of sleeper cars. Private, AC and Fan. Depending on the time of year, the AC car can get very cold and you may find the Fan car more comfortable and there is obviously a price difference between them. You will find there is also a price difference in the bed you choose. Upper beds are less expensive than the lower ones, but if you're claustrophobic the upper bed is a poor choice.

Once you arrive in Suratthani you will take a short ride to the ferry terminal where you will take the ferry to Thongsala pier in  Koh Phangan. Like the bus, normally your ticket will be a "Joint Ticket" that includes the transfer to ferry terminal and the ferry, but it's advised you check with your travel agent before you purchase.

THINGS TO KNOW: The sleeper car is very popular and normally sells out a day in advance and three days in advance during peak times of the year. It is suggested you purchase your ticket as soon as possible, especially if you wish to have a lower bed or private room.
